Lauran: Who am I, and what does creative flow mean to me?

I am a practicing visual artist and arts facilitator. I am studying for a Master's in Arts Practice (Arts, Health & Wellbeing) at the University of South Wales and believe in art's possible healing powers to improve one's well-being. I also work alongside Art Therapies UK to deliver workshops for Birmingham's local communities in various settings.

To me, creative flow is a moment in time when chronic pain and negative thoughts/ emotions are temporarily removed by participating in making art. By engaging in creativity, we are invited to distract ourselves from what is presently troubling us for that short time, leaving us in a more positive mindset to carry on with the day. The inspiration for creative flow comes from psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's' 10 stages of flow' research into what makes people happy and their lives worthwhile.

I aim to provide creative health workshops within Worcestershire for potential participants living with chronic pain by demonstrating creative tools that can be used to improve a person's well-being and how art can be used as an awareness of what living with pain is like. I understand the weight of living with chronic pain as I live with endometriosis and appreciate how important it is to be heard while being part of something. This is reflected in my artwork, using various materials as metaphors for my condition.
